Speaking of PBS . . .

. . . the girls got up on time, finished breakfast, and got dressed quickly, so were rewarded with being able to watch "Arthur" before we left for school.

Lo and behold! The episode was:

Arthur #1110

"Big Brother Binky", Parts I&II

In this special two-part episode, Binky's family adopts a baby girl from China. Binky receives the news of getting a baby sister with great excitement, and he delights in helping prepare for her arrival and visiting China. Although at times Binky worries about how his life will change, and more importantly, whether his new sister will even like him! - Binky becomes the proudest big brother in Elwood City.
The girls loved it, and international sophisticates that they are laughed as everyone said "shay-shay" (thank you in Chinese (xie xie)), a gross mispronunciation to them! They are definitely finding validation for their stories by seeing Chinese ballerinas and familiar characters talking about adoption.

I am just glad we are seeing representations of television of various types of families. I think it is important for all children to have exposure (and see normalcy) in adoption, multi-racial families, and multiple ethnicities when they turn on the television. However, we still have to watch for stereotypes and false information--too often diversity in any form is accepted as truth or enough.

We bought the DVD for our 5 year old bio-son just before we left for China to pick up his new 4 year old sister this summer. He's probably watched it 50 times at least since then. I find it especially great for him ,as bio-kids can often feel forgotten about when discussing adoption of a sibling. It really helped me talk with him about his feeling toward the changes to our family. Now if they could only come out with the book version of this story I'd order one for us and his school.

We have the episodes on DVD and our daughter loves it. She is adopted from China and we are waiting for her mei mei. The episodes help tell her story and tell her what to expect when we travel to China to adopt mei mei.

I agree... it is great episode for our kids to watch. If I remember correctly, there is another word that is mispronouced. I think it is "jiozi" (dumpling). It's too bad the writers didn't do their homework on the correct pronunciation of the words, though I suppose it is realistic in that many adoptive families probably mispronounce Chinese words that they are learning!

I think I got our copy at Walmart (if you don't mind going in there). It was in the kids section and pretty easy to find.

I'm sure it is also available through the on-line stores or at most electronic stores. I would just phone around. It's called "Big Brother Binky" and it's an "Arthur" episode.

I'll have to try and find it on DVD.

So, how do you pronounce xie xie? We were taught shay shay. Hmmmm....
