Anti-Huntsman Ad Hits Home for Adoptive Families

This is the first piece I've seen addressing adoptive parents' reaction to the anti-Huntsman video I posted:
Presidential politics hit home for an Alexandria family on Friday after a web ad aimed at Republican candidate Jon Huntsman raised questions about his values, citing his ability to speak Chinese and his decision to adopt children from China and India. The ad, sponsored by a group identified as NYLiberty4Paul, urges voters to support Texas Congressman Ron Paul in the race, though Paul disavowed the ad and said his campaign had nothing to do with it.

"It's a very strange way to make a point," said Alexandria lawyer Nancy Jo Nelson, who has adopted three girls from China.

"I think there is nothing more American than adopting a child that has been abandoned anywhere in the world. It's a highly American thing to do," she said.
Any local reporting of this in your area?  Interesting response from the mom -- it's "a highly American thing" to adopt children anywhere in the world?  Of course, folks from other countries do the same thing!  And you could really turn that one on its head, too:  international adoption can be criticized as neo-colonial, imperialistic depradation of the so-called third world by the Western world, including America.  So in that way, international adoption is a "highly American thing" to do!

  1. It is interesting to note that there appears to be evidence that the video was actually made by a supporter of Jon Huntsman to smear Ron Paul. So, one can never make too much of these things.

  2. I am already disgusted and tired of the political ads and games. I fear this is going to be a long year.

  3. I agree with Reena- it's going to be a VERY long year...I wasn't too happy with the ad, or with JH's response. Nothing like using your children as political pawns...

  4. Melinda-
With all due respect, Im getting tired of reading from this blog and another highly trafficked blog that it was an "ad" against Huntsman. As far as we know, it was a jerk who flamed a candidate on youtube. That's it. There is no evidence it was an ad and to say so just rubs me wrong....the same as asking an AP "do you know her 'real' parents?" I realize it's just one word, but please, can we call it like it is, and not make something bigger of it.....I think that can be done and still be able to critique the making of it. On second thought, skip the critiquing of it. That is probably the exact publication this nut job is looking for. Nothing more. So....moving on.....

  5. Anon, with all due respect, you might note that the only time I have called it an "Ad" is in the headline to this post, and that's because THAT'S what the headline to the article I posted called it. In all other instances I've referred to it as "the Huntsman video."

If you're tired of this blog, I suggest you just move along!
