She’s only 20, but Kahleah Guibault has already made a dozen humanitarian trips to Guatemala to work with children in orphanages and institutions. The profileof Kahleah Guibault is for a series about the Top 20 young people in Nova Scotia.
The Central American country, beset by poverty, is Guibault’s birthplace, where she spent the first five months of her life in a foster home before her Nova Scotia parents adopted her.
She was 12 when she first went back with her parents to reconnect with her heritage. Conditions in the orphanages — in some cases, one staff member has to look after as many as 60 children — prompted her to start a series of trips.
"I’ve just kept going back," she said.

"Whether that will be adoption-related or not, I’m not sure yet, but we’ll see."
