Reprint: Talking Explicitly About Race/Racism
Mamapedia has reprinted this post about talking race and racism with kids. I submitted it to them eons ago, and forgot about it! Thought I'd raise the topic again here, as well.
Thanks for bringing up the topic again. Food for thought as we move into our first planning meeting concerning these issues (Positive Learning Environment Committee) at our school.
There's many blank looks when this topic is discussed, but the key is the information needs to out front and concrete - not abstract and flowery. "Hints" don't work in school age children. Or many people, for that matter!
